This is a question I’ve gotten a handful of times, and I took some photos of my collar/bodice attachment over the weekend, so I figured this would make a good entry for FAQ Friday – especially appropriate this week as I’ll be at Disney World when this posts š
So anyway, my Snow White costume has a lace-up back with a remove-able collar. Honestly when I was in the middle of making this costume, I had NO IDEA if this was going to work right until I put it on and it worked right, haha. Part of the reason for that is that I used a bodice pattern I used a lot – except I altered it to go over the shoulder, so the entire upper shoulder/collar section was one of my own creation.
I did use the Simplicity Snow White collar pattern as a basis for my own:
I made it a little bit bigger though, and the interior has some really stiff interfacing.
So, I decided the best way to do this was to make the collar removable, and I did that by using snap tape – I figured that would be easier than trying to line up individual snaps. Here’s the collar attached to the bodice with the first couple of snaps undone:
I took the two pieces of snap tape, same length, and sewed them to the collar and the bodice, lined up. The piece of the snap tape that went across the opening of the back, I just cut away. So there’s a couple of snaps on the collar that don’t attach to anything, right at the center back.
Here’s the interior of the bodice, and the back of the collar:
As you can see, my eyelets do not go all the way to the top, so that the size of the top section is not effected by however tight or loose I lace up the bodice, and I don’t end up with a collar that doesn’t fit. The collar itself keeps the top section in place.
Here’s a shot from when I first wore it, where you can see the gap where there’s no bodice attached to the collar:
I was originally going to add the leftover snap tape (the part I’d cut off the bodice opening) to the top of the cape, to cover that section, but I never got to it!
I hope that makes sense? I was pretty pleased with the way the collar turned out, and that it actually worked – now I just want to remake my bodice š
